Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology

          The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology deals with the diagnosis and medical management of Oro facial diseases and the Oral manifestations of systemic disorders. It also deals with the maxillofacial imaging and dental management of medically compromised patients.

          The Department emphasis on case history recording, general and local examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and dental management of medically compromised patients. Students are taught to take different Intraoral Radiography and interpret them. Various extra oral views, special imaging techniques and their indications are demonstrated. The department is equipped with 28 dental chairs, a general examination room, clinical diagnostic instruments, an electronic pulp tester, digital cameras and computers with internet and printing facilities along with Tobacco Cessation Centre, Geriatric Clinic and Orofacial Pain Clinic.

          The Department is run by dedicated clinicians who are well informed and highly motivated to train the undergraduate and postgraduate students in the ever changing and advancing procedures in clinical Oral medicine.

  • Oral cancer screening camps for patients in and around Raichur district every year.
  • All patients are initially screened in the Department of Oral Medicine for various dental and oral mucosal diseases like ulcerative and precancerous lesions.
  • Diagnosis and investigation of maxillofacial pathologies like Cysts, Tumors and Fractures.
  • Early detection and Screening of Oral Pre cancerous and Cancerous lesions.
  • Medical management of Oral and Salivary gland diseases, temporomandibular disorders and Orofacial pain.
  • Dental management of medically compromised patients.
  • Oral cancer screening camps for patients in and around Raichur district every year.
  • Diagnosis and management of Oro- facial pain disorders.
  • Oral Health care promotion including Tobacco Cessation Programmes.
  • Management of Oral manifestations of systemic disorders.
  • Biopsy of the soft tissue lesions and growth.
  • TENS therapy for Temporomandibular disorders
  • Intralesional therapy for Various Oromucosal Lesions
  • Intraoral Digital radiographs and Extraoral Digital radiographs like panoramic radiographs for diagnosis of Head and Neck pathologies.
  • Age estimation using Radiographic methods.
  • Extraoral radiological examination of maxillofacial fractures.
  • Sialographic  examination for Salivary gland Pathology

Departmental Activities

Oral Medicine

  • Cleaning the operating chair with detergent/ disinfectant before every patient is seated.
  • Cleaning of all the instruments with detergent/ disinfectant, followed by sterilization.
  • Sterilization of the instruments as per the standard protocol thrice a day
  • A biological spore test will be run daily for each steam Autoclave unit.
  • Informed consent from the patient is obtained before starting the treatment.
  • Disinfection of hands with antimicrobial soap before and after examination/treatment of patient.
  • Wearing of disposable gloves, apron, head cap and mouth mask during examination/treatment.
  • The drape covering the patient is changed for every patient.
  • Use of disposable glass and suction tip for every patient.
  • After the treatment/Biopsy is done, the next appointment is scheduled and the same is informed to the patient.
  • Referring the patient to corresponding department after examination/treatment for further treatment.
  • Clinical waste generated is segregated and disposal of waste according to colour coded bags.

ORAL RADIOLOGY

  • Obtaining intraoral and extraoral radiographs with proper disinfection measures.
  • Use of lead apron and thyroid collar for radiation protection of patient during radiological procedures.
  • Use of appropriate lead aprons & lead barriers for radiation protection of operators.
  • Digital intraoral sensor is covered with disposable plastic barrier cover for every patient.
  • Storage of films in a protective lead container.
  • Radiographic processing solutions are changed periodically.
  • Proper disposal of lead foil and processing solutions.
  • Clinical waste generated is segregated and disposal of waste according to colour coded bags.
  • Digital radiographs obtained will be sent to the other departments through e-mail/LAN.
