Department of Oral Pathology

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Microbiology is a branch of Dental Science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease of mouth and Jaws (Oral Cavity) through the examination of exfoliated cells, surgically removed tissues (Biopsy samples) and body fluids (Blood and saliva) using the tools of immunohistochemistry, microbiology and hematology.

The Department of Oral Pathology is involved in teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in pathology and aims at training the students to meet the global competency. The staffs of the Department are actively involved in academic and research activities & have many publications in international and national journals, delivered guest lectures and presented scientific papers at various platforms.

ACTIVITIES

  • The Department of Oral Pathology is involved in teaching and training of 1st year – Dental Anatomy, Embryology and Oral Histology, and 2nd and 3rd year BDS – Oral Pathology and Microbiology
  • The Department of Oral Pathology is involved in teaching and training of postgraduate students in oral pathology, microbiology and forensic odontology.
  • The Department of Oral Pathology carries out histopathological, immunohsitochemical and basic hematological tests.

  • Estimation of stress levels in Dental students using ELISA based salivary Cortisol levels.

IV. Ongoing research projects

  • Quantitative assessment and association of serum fucose in different stages of Oral Submucous Fibrosis – Received RGUHS research grants.
  • Antibacterial Activity of Cow urine on Oral Cariogenic Bacteria- An in-Vitro study- Received internal research grants from the institution

SERVICES PROVIDED

The Department has good infrastructure and facilities to carry out histopathological, immunohsitochemical and basic hematological tests.

Laboratory is fully equipped with facilities for diagnosis of oral lesions.

  • Histopathology lab is equipped with semiautomatic microtome with section transfer system, necessary histopathology and special stains and immunohistochemistry set up.
  • Cytopathology lab with facilities for fine needle aspiration cytology and exfoliative cytology.
  • Hematology lab with facilities for basic blood investigations.
